Lagos State Launches Lake Rice

Govs Ambode And Bagudu Launch Lake Rice

Lagos State governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode and his Kebbi State counterpart, Alhaji Atiku Bagudu on Wednesday launched the much anticipated Lagos-Kebbi Rice christened LAKE RICE.

Speaking at the launching ceremony held at Lagos House in Ikeja, Governor Ambode said the development was a great and historic moment for both states and Nigeria, as the rice would not only be sold at highly reduced price, compared to what obtains in the market but is also very fresh and safe for consumption.

Giving a breakdown of the prices, Governor Ambode said that while the 50kg will sell for N12, 000, 25kg would go for N6, 000 and 10kg for N2, 500, adding that for now, an individual would only be allowed to purchase a bag to enable it to go round.

He also commended President Muhammadu Buhari for supporting the collaboration between Lagos and Kebbi, just as he disclosed that the Federal Government has donated two rice mills to the State Government to increase production of rice next year.

Also speaking, Governor Bagudu, who went down memory lane of how the collaboration started with a discussion between him and Governor Ambode during a meeting in Abuja, said the partnership was a confirmation of both State Governments’ commitment to the agenda of making Nigeria a big market in Africa.

Inside Magic Leap, The Secretive $4.5 Billion Startup Changing Computing Forever

The hottest ticket in tech is an invitation to a banal South Florida business park, indistinguishable on the outside from countless other office buildings that dot America's suburban landscape. Inside, it's a whole different story. A different reality, in fact. Humanoid robots walk down the halls, and green reptilian monsters hang out in the lounge. Cartoon fairies turn the lights on and off. War machines, 75 feet tall, patrol the parking lot.
Even the office equipment does the impossible. The high-definition television hanging on the wall seems perfectly normal. Until it vanishes. A moment later it reappears in the middle of the room. Incredibly, it is now levitating in midair. Get as close as you'd like, check it out from different angles. It's 80 inches diagonal, tuned to ESPN--and there is nothing holding it up.
The TV looks real, but it is not. All these wonders are illusions, conjured into being through the lenses of a "mixed reality" headset--the arcane invention of the startup called Magic Leap.
Like any good magician, founder and CEO Rony Abovitz, 45, keeps his cards close to his chest. Magic Leap has operated in extreme secrecy since it was founded in 2011. Only a few people got to see its technology, even fewer knew how it worked, and all of them were buried under so many nondisclosure agreements that they could barely admit the company existed.
Yet massive amounts of money were flowing down to Dania Beach, Florida, a town of 30,000 just south of Fort Lauderdale. To date, Magic Leap has raised nearly $1.4 billion in venture capital, including $794 million this past February, reportedly the largest C round in history. Seemingly every blue-chip tech investor has a chunk, including Andreessen Horowitz, Kleiner Perkins, Google, JPMorgan, Fidelity and Alibaba, plus there's backing from less conventional sources such as Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment, the maker of films like Godzilla and Jurassic World. Magic Leap was valued at $4.5 billion in its latest round of financing. If Abovitz has held on to just 22% of the company--which he denies-- he's a billionaire.
Magic Leap's innovation isn't just a high-tech display--it's a disruption machine. This technology could affect every business that uses screens or computers and many that don't. It could kill the $120 billion market for flat-panel displays and shake the $1 trillion global consumer-electronics business to its core. The applications are profound. Throw out your PC, your laptop and your mobile phone, because the computing power you need will be in your glasses, and they can make a display appear anywhere, at any size you like.
RONY ABOVITZ HAS always surrounded himself with visions of a high-tech future. Born in 1971 to Israeli immigrants living in Cleveland, he grew up fascinated with computers and science fiction. "My generation are the children of Steve Jobs and George Lucas," he says. "We grew up on that, and our brains all got scrambled. . . . My friends and I all wanted to be Luke Skywalker and defeat the Death Star and build C-3PO."
When he was 11, the family moved to South Florida; he started high school at 13, a year early. After graduation he was accepted at MIT but chose the University of Miami, staying close to home. He received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1994 and a master's in biomedical engineering two years later--and then he started thinking about Star Wars again.

U.S. Returns Some Land On Japan’s Okinawa

The United States and Japan held a ceremony on Wednesday marking the U.S. military’s return of nearly 10,000 acres (4,046 hectares) of land on Okinawa island to the Japanese government, the largest transfer since 1972.

Resentment on the southern island has simmered for years among residents opposed to the U.S. Marines’ Futenma air base there. They want the base moved off the island but the central government aims to relocate it to a less-populated part of Okinawa.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and the U.S. ambassador to Japan, Caroline Kennedy, attended the ceremony in Tokyo, with another event on Okinawa planned for Thursday.
The U.S. military said in a statement Japan had made sufficient progress in building helipads and access roads to consolidate military training in other areas and allow for the return of the 9,909 acres.
The returned land is part of the Northern Training Area, or Camp Gonsalves or the Jungle Warfare Training Center, and is the largest U.S. installation in Japan with 19,300 acres of land.

Yaya Toure says he is open to signing a new contract with Manchester City

It all marks a remarkable turn around for a player who found himself frozen out of the team earlier in the season following a public falling out between his coach, Pep Guardiola and agent, Dmitri Seluk. All parties involved patched things up and the Ivorian was restored to the first team.
His return has coincided with a nice run of form for City who have won every of the five matches he has started. With things going so well, the player says he is willing to commit his future to the club after his contract runs out at the end of the season.
He said:
'When I signed for City, I came to this club to make history.'
'I want this club to be bigger than Manchester United. I know it's going to be a lot of work, but that's my dream. 'I want to make something very important. I already won two Premier League titles and I want more than that, another new story. 'I have been lucky to play at big clubs – Barcelona and Olympiakos. Those teams were always used to being champions. But City, it was something different, and I am happy now. 'I think I've always been a key figure. To be honest, I belong on the field.'

Expose corruption and get rich- FG

The Federal Government has approved payment of not more than five per cent of the recovered loot to any successful whistle blower, who provides relevant information leading to the recovered funds.
The Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, made this known when briefing State House correspondents on the outcome of the Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja on Wednesday.
She said the council approved a Whistle Blowing policy aimed at consolidating the ongoing anti-corruption campaign embarked upon by the present administration.
Adeosun said the policy would soon be supported by a bill already receiving due attention of the National Assembly.
According to her, adequate measures are being taken to protect and safe guard the lives and identities of whistle blowers.
“If you whistle-blow in public-spirit and in good faith, you will be protected.
“If you feel that you have been treated badly because of your report, you can file a formal complaint.
“If you have suffered harassment, intimidation or victimisation for sharing your concerns, restitution will be made for any loss suffered.”
Adeosun also said that Federal Government had begun payment of December salaries to enable civil servants to celebrate the Christmas and New Year.
The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, also disclosed that the council has approved the construction of the Second Niger Bridge through the Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) scheme.

Mark Zukerberg introduces Jarvis, his virtual home assistant to the world

Facebook founder, Mark Zukerberg, on Tuesday, introduced Jarvis to the world. Jarvis is a home assistant with a difference – he isn’t human, but an app. This software was developed by the tech entrepreneur to meet a variety of needs around the house, from turning off the light, adjusting the room temperature to one that is favourable, preparing meals and even supplying Mark with a change of clothes.

Jarvis responds to Mark’s voice and talks back to him, lets guests in after a facial identification, it also alerts him of his schedule and things going on within the house, for instance, when Max, Mark’s daughter with wife Priscilla, woke from sleep, Jarvis informed Mark about it. There is very little that Jarvis cannot do around the house as can be seen in the video shared by Mark.

While the app was still being built, Priscilla, Mark’s wife, encountered some issues with it initially. At first, the app only responded to Mark’s voice, completely ignoring Priscilla’s instructions. She also complained that the voice used earlier was a bit aggressive (Arnold Schwarzenegger’s voice). Modifications were made afterwards to create what Mark introduced to the world yesterday; a friendly, helpful software which detects your needs as a family and meets them - and sometimes refuses them if it doesn’t approve. Lol.

Watch the video below to see Jarvis’ reply after Mark asked it to play some good Nickelback songs.

Chibok Schoolgirls Visit White House

In a week that could almost be termed “Nigeria week at the White House,” two Chibok schoolgirls who escaped from their captors were at the home of the United States President for a tour of the White House Christmas decorations.
The girls are currently on a scholarship in the U.S., sponsored by Education Must Continue Initiative (EMCI).
The Chibok schoolgirls visit last weekend was preceded by that of prominent upcoming New York Times best-selling author and blogger Luvvie Ajayi just the day before.
This is the fourth in a series of White House visits for the Chibok girls in US  facilitated by US Congresswoman Frederica Wilson of Florida in conjunction with Education Must Continue Initiative. Over half a dozen Chibok girls had visited the White House in Easter 2015 and 2016 but this the first Christmas visit.
A Nigerian American schoolgirl was amongst the band of singers for the White House Christmas tree carols. Sixth grader, Gracina Ogebe who is part of the US host family of the Chibok girls was separately invited with her school to perform just days before her adoptive sisters were to visit the White House. It was indeed a week for Nigerians at the White House from the East, South and the North.
One of the Chibok girls, a high school senior said after the visit “It was good! The house looks amazing. They’ve decorated the whole house and also, there are different choir groups performing.”
The two Chibok girls are the top academic performers of their set in the US.
